Smoke Free Policy

Ardscoil Phadraig, Granard operates a smoke-free policy as and from the 29th March 2004.

Rationale

  • Smoking is the single most preventable cause of premature death and ill-health in our society.
  • Passive smoking is also potentially fatal.  It has been shown to cause lung-cancer, as well as many other illnesses in non-smokers.
  • Smoking is a Health and Safety issue for all who use the school.
  • Everyone has the right to breathe clean air.
  • Schools have a major role to play in working towards non-smoking being seen as the norm in society.

This policy is implemented in compliance with the following legislation:

Public Health (Tobacco) Act 2002:

Section 45, which prohibits the sale of tobacco products to persons under 18 years of age.

Section 47, which states that the smoking of tobacco products is prohibited or restricted in all parts of a school.

Public Health (Tobacco) Amendment Act 2004:

Section 47 Amendment of 2002 Act, prohibiting smoking in all workplaces, to commence on 29th March 2004.

It is the responsibility of the school management to ensure that the above regulations are fully complied with.

Consequently, smoking is not allowed on the school premises, buildings or grounds, including a 100-metre perimeter of the school grounds.  The same principles will apply to all school related activities, outings, trips, visits, etc…  involving any teaching or non-teaching staff.

It is the intention of the School Management that Ardscoil Phadraig be a Smoke-Free zone.

Smoke-free signs will be displayed to advise all staff, students, visitors and the public that the school is smoke-free and that smoking is prohibited.  Parents will be informed of this policy by letter.

Disciplinary Procedures For Violations of the Smoke-Free Policy:

If a student smokes it is considered a serious breach of school rules and will result in an automatic three-day suspension from school.  Further breaches will be dealt with under

the school’s Code of Discipline.

The effective implementation of this policy will require the full cooperation of every student.

The policy will be reviewed annually.
