Our annual awards night took place last week and was a great night of celebrations for the nominees, award winners and their families. Congratulations to Katie Comaskey who was announced as Senior Student of the Year and James Kiernan who was awarded Junior Student of the Year. Dylan Corcoran and Sara Lee Greene picked up Senior Sports students of the year, while Filip Nowacki and Edel Sheehy won the Junior Section. Other award winners on the night included Sophie Flynn, Marguerite Kelly, James Flynn, Lochlainn Massey, Rokas Brezinskas, Owen Smith and Eimear Kelly.

Scifest

Transition year students recently competed in the regional scifest competition in Athlone IT. This was a very educational outing as students had time to view other schools projects along with presenting their own projects. Project titles included, the effects of performance enhancing drugs on athletes, cures for nettle stings, research into the safety aspects of drive assist in cars, the effect of energy drinks on pulse rate, the effect of music on studying and research into the awareness of BSE among farmers. Students created posters and project books and presented their projects to a number of judges on the day. This was a great opportunity for students to enhance their research, analytical, presentation, scientific and group work skills. Well done to all students.

Achill

On Wednesday 3rd May 49 students and 4 teachers travelled to Achill Outdoor and Adventure Centre for three days. We were extremely lucky as the weather was fantastic for the time we were there. Students thoroughly enjoyed the trip. Students participated in activities such as canoeing, surfing, coastering, mountain climbing, hill walking and team activities. This was a great experience for students and a great chance for them to sample a range of water based activities. Students are already looking forward to next year.

Active Schools Flag

Just before the Easter break Ardscoil Phádraig were awarded the Active Schools Flag, becoming the first secondary school in the county to be awarded this flag. We have been working towards this flag for the past two years, enhancing all areas of physical activity within the school. Areas of focus included updating and increasing the variety of sports equipment, including more variety for lunchtime activities such as table tennis, uni-hoc, basketball, soccer, badminton, boxercise, circuits and running club.

Well done to all members of the active schools committee and to the whole school community for promoting our school as an active school and enhancing physical activity levels in school and outside of school through links with the broader community. We will have the flag for three years, when we can reapply to retain the flag as we have more goals in sight to further develop physical activity over the coming years.

TY Irish Orals

Comghairdeas to all of our TY students who successfully completed their Irish orals last week as part of their Irish Culture module. Students will be presented with their ‘Fáinne Airgid’ at the TY  presentation night next week. Maith sibh go léir!
