School Notes – 19th April, 2019

First Year students went on a geographical hiking trail to Knocknarea and Queen Maeve's Cairn in Co. Sligo and Strandhill.

Field Trip to Knocknarea

Last Tuesday, the First Year students went on a geographical hiking trail to Knocknarea and Queen Maeve’s Cairn in Co. Sligo. They were accompanied by Ms Doyle, Mr Flanagan and Ms Reynolds who organised the trip. The trail went from The Glen on the southeastern side of the mountain, up to the top and back down to Strandhill on the other side. Apart from the great fitness test, the students enjoyed an introduction to a host of geographical and historical features which will be explored further in class. The weather was perfect, with the sun appearing upon reaching the peak and Maeve’s supposed tomb. It was all finished off with lunch overlooking the beach at Strandhill. Everyone had a great day.

Foroige Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) competition

As part of TY this year students entered the Foroige Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) competition. Five excellent companies set about creating a product or service and bringing them to market. After our school market stalls and in house competition five companies were whittled down to two exceptional business ideas namely Shake it Make it Bake it!!! and Our Quick Shop. Both excellent and innovative business ideas but with very different purposes. Shake it Make it Bake it!!! set about making ready-measured cookie mixes in attractively packaged cookie jars to help those who want to bake but without the hassle!! Our Quick Shop set out to provide an online platform for local businesses to advertise their products and services and hopefully increase sales as a result. Their motto is stay local, shop local, support local. After a hugely successful presentation at the Leinster regionals in in Maynooth University both businesses made it through to the semi-finals which were held on Wednesday April 10th in the Huckletree Centre in Dublin. We are awaiting the results of the semi finals currently but Ardscoil Phádraig could not be prouder of our wonderful, young and vibrant entrepreneurs!! Well done and congratulations to you all.

3rd Year Metalwork

Well done to all third year Metalwork students, who, under the guidance of Mr. Mulvey, recently completed this year’s Junior Certificate project “Model Roadster”. All students had to manufacture the basic Roadster before adding side panels and steps, designed and

manufactured by themselves. Students worked very hard to produce projects which are of an extremely high standard.

Leaving Certificate History

Congratulations to Ardscoil Phádraig’s Leaving Cert History class on the completion of their History Research Study Report which is worth 20% of their overall mark. This is the first time that Ardscoil Phadraig have had a Leaving Cert History class in many years and the students have put huge work into their studies for it. Well done all!

National Tree Week 2019

National Tree Week 2019 was from March 31st – 7th April. Longford County Council kindly donated eight trees to the school. The Green Schools Team are planting them around our school as a symbol of our commitment to helping the environment and promoting a sustainable future for our students.

Ms. Kelly along with students and representatives from the ESB Network and Business in the Community Project in Ardscoil Phadraig.

ESB Network and Business in the Community

The final wrap up session of this year’s ESB Network and Business in the Community Project took place this morning. Many thanks to Padraig from ESB Networks and Petrina from BITC Ireland for visiting us. Also a special thanks to ESB for facilitating so many of our students on work experience placements this year. We are proud of the positive attitude towards learning shown by our students and thanks to Ms Kelly for all her hard work over the year to ensure our students took the most from the link up with the ESB.

Easter Break

Happy Easter to all our students and staff at Ardscoil Phádraig. We hope that everyone has an enjoyable and relaxing break before our final term. Good luck to our Junior and Leaving Certificate students who will hopefully be using this time to get some studying done!
