School Notes – 15th November, 2019

Two students from Ardscoil Phádraig taking part in Climate Action Week

Climate Action Week

A fantastic array of activities took place just before half term in celebration of Climate Action Week. We had a Climate Pledge Board on Display in the Assembly hall for the week so all students and staff could make their pledge for Climate Change. We also participated in a No Power for an Hour initiative, our new school Polytunnel was constructed and student Biodiversity projects are now in full swing. Sincere thanks to all students on our Green Schools Committee who work with Ms.Reilly, Mr.Gerety and Ms.Cooney in continuously promoting the importance of taking action to protect our environment.

Transition Year students at Ardscoil Phádraig visited Cathaldus and Claire Hartin's inspiring home as part of their Architecture Module.

Architecture Module T.Y. Trip

As part of their Architecture Module, Transition Years were privileged this week to be afforded the opportunity by Cathaldus and Claire Hartin to visit their inspiring home which was designed by the award winning Mc Garry Moon Architects. It is a fantastic piece of architecture which is intrinsically linked to the surrounding landscape, vernacular architecture and the needs of the clients. They also went to see another building of architectural interest when they took a tour of the Arigna Mines. This was not only informative but gave the students a real insight into how the miners carried out their daily duties in tough conditions. A great day was had by all.

BT Young Scientist

Congratulations to Sebastian Faller, Michael Tierney Stakem and Alex Fahy in TY who were successful in getting into the BT young scientist competition which takes place in the RDS in January. Their project is titled “Does technology affect learning and research”. Best of luck to the lads with their work in the coming months.

Senior Girls football team in Ardscoil Phadraig on their winning performance against Lanesboro.

Senior Ladies Football

Well done to our Senior Ladies Football team who defeated Lanesboro Community College recently and who also recorded a convincing victory over Mullingar Community College on Thursday. We wish the girls and their coaches Ms.Doyle, Ms.Mulligan, Ms.Magan and Ms.Reynolds continued success throughout the coming weeks.

Senior Boys Football

Well done to Ardscoil Phadraig’s Senior Boys’ Football Team who defeated Kilucan 2.16 to 2.10 before half term. All the boys played very skillfully and worked together as a team and a particular mention to Calahan Flood who had a great game.

Congratulations

Congratulations to St Mary’s GAA Granard who were crowned Patsy Reilly Cup champions recently and to St.Columbas Mullinalaghta who also finished their season on a high by retaining their Leader Cup crown this afternoon. Well done to both clubs and special mention to all of our past and present students involved in their success.

Shoebox Appeal

Every year the Christmas Shoebox Appeal sends thousands of gift-filled shoeboxes to children in Africa and Eastern Europe who are affected by

poverty. As has been the case in recent years, Ardscoil Phádraig is currently taking part in the 2019 Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal. We would like to thank everyone who has taken part this year and for all their lovely donations. The boxes will be sent on Friday the 8th November for anyone who has a last addition to make.

Science Week

As we look forward to Science Week which will be celebrated from 10th-17th November, our Science teachers have announced details of our First and Second Year competitions as follows; – 1st Year Students – Design a model of a plant or animal cell;  2nd Year Students – Design a model of an atom. Best wishes to all students as they work on their designs and we have no doubt that you will continue with the same fantastic standard of work produced by our students last year. Thank you to our Science teachers Ms.Fitzpatrick, Mr.Domican, Ms.Magan and Ms.Conlon for their work in organising next week’s activities.

Open Evening

Staff and students of Ardscoil Phádraig look forward to welcoming 5th and 6th class pupils and their parents to our annual Open Evening which will take place on Thursday 14th November at 7pm. Our Open Evening offers all prospective students an opportunity to view our fantastic facilities, meet our dedicated staff and students and learn about the large range of subjects, curricular programmes and extra-curricular activities which we offer in the school.

Bin It

The Green schools committee invited the Bin It! roadshow to the school this morning to work with our first year students. It was a very informative morning, we learned about the damage litter does to our environment and what we can do to stop it in our community.

Ardscoil Phádraig’s U16s girls’ basketball team who continued their winning ways with a fantastic victory over Moate Community School.

School Basketball

Well done to our U16s girls’ basketball team who continued their winning ways with a fantastic victory over Moate Community School recently. We wish the girls and their coaches Ms.Rushe, Ms.Conlon and Ms.Cheevers continued success as they now sit at the top of their group with one game remaining. Commiserations to our U19 and U16 boys’ basketball teams and their coaches Ms.Reilly and Ms.Brennan, who were narrowly defeated by Templemichael College.

Maths Week

Maths week has been a great success again this year. There were puzzles, prizes and even a Treasure Hunt to get the students and staff engaged in the subject. Thank you to Ms. Rushe, Ms. Donohoe, and Ms. Doyle for all your hard work.
