Science Week 2019

Science Week was celebrated recently with First and Second Year students investigating the Laws of Physics in our Paper Aeroplane Competition. Well done to all winners. Also as part of our Science Week activities Transition Year students took part in an interactive workshop exploring the life and legacy of Mary Ward, one of Ireland’s first female scientists. The workshop was delivered by artists Tina Claffery and Caroline Conway. Many thanks to Granard Library and Midlands Science for inviting us to attend and to our Science Department for facilitating such an enjoyable morning.

Ardscoil Phádraig’s First Year Girls’ Futsal team who took part in the FAI Leinster Futsal Final in the National Arena Tallaght.

Well done to our First Year girls Futsal team who represented us brilliantly at the FAI Leinster Futsal Final in the National Arena Tallaght. The girls defeated Sacred Heart School Tullamore 3-2 with Sarah McSherry grabbing a hat-trick, before eventually being knocked out by beaten finalists Kishoge Community College Lucan. Well done to all team members and their mentors Ms. Magan and Ms. Conlon. We have no doubt that you will build on this fantastic experience as you continue to wear the Ardscoil Phádraig jersey with pride over the months and years ahead.

Gaeilge24 at Ardscoil Phádraig.

Comhghairdeas leis na daltaí go léir a ghlac páirt i nGaeilge24 iontach. Almost 80 students and teachers accepted the challenge to speak Irish for 24 hours as part of the nationwide initiative organised by Conradh na Gaeilge. Well done to all participants and thank you to Ms. Reynolds and our Gaeilge Department for organising the activities. It was fantastic to hear so many students and teachers conversing as Gaeilge throughout the day. Beatha teanga í a labhairt.

Christmas Shoebox Appeal at Ardscoil Phádraig.

Christmas Shoebox Appeal

Sincere thank you to all students, staff, parents and members of the local community who contributed so generously to this year’s Christmas Shoebox Appeal. Over 120 gift-filled shoeboxes are currently making their way from Ardscoil Phádraig to children in Africa and Eastern Europe. We have no doubt that your contributions will bring great joy and excitement to children living in often very difficult situations. Well done to Ms. Mc Guinness, our TYs and all students who helped to make our 2019 Christmas Shoebox Appeal such a huge success.

Fifth Year students from Ardscoil Phadraig with ESB Networks Longford as part of the Skills at Work Programme.

ESB Networks

Fifth Year students were hosted by ESB Networks Longford recently as part of the Skills at Work Programme. Padraig and his staff made all students feel extremely welcome and ensured that the tour of the facility was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The trip concluded with a visit to the Corlea Trackway. Our group wish to extend a special word of thanks to Petrina for accompanying our students around the facility today and to Ms. Kelly and Ms. Rushe for their work in continuing to progress the fantastic partnership between our school and ESB Networks over the last number of years.

NUIG Visit

Many thanks to Gráinne Dunne from NUI Galway who visited our Leaving Certificate students today, providing them with a very informative insight into the broad range of Third Level options available in the university. Thank you to Mr. O’Brien for facilitating her visit as part of our College Awareness Week activities.

Ardscoil Phádraig First Year Metalwork students who recently completed their egg cup task.

1st Year Metalwork

Well done to our 1st Year Metalwork students who recently completed their egg cup task. All students had to manufacture the egg cup from Perspex before bending it to shape. Students worked very hard to produce projects which are of an extremely high standard and are now looking forward to working on their next task which will require them to design and create a bird feeder for use during the winter months.

LGBTI+ Awareness Week

Thanks to our Pupil Voice Committee who organised a number of events recently to mark LGBTI+ Awareness Week. Activities included a Pop Culture Quiz, LGBTI+ Awareness Workshops, Karaoke and culminated in our Rainbow Day on Friday.

School Football

The Junior Boys Football team had a fantastic 3-18 to 3-5 victory over Castlepollard Community College with stand-out performances from Sean Corcoran, Declan Reilly, Ben Creegan, Michael Masterson and Jack Cheyne. Well done also to our boys and girls Junior Football teams who both progressed to the knock out stages of their Leinster competitions this week. The boys defeated Mullingar Community College 4-13 to 3-8 with Adam Kelly grabbing all four goals while the girls secured a comfortable victory over a gallant Lanesboro Community College side. Well done also to our First Years boys who faced terrible weather conditions in their recent BR Hubert Plate competition outing. Following two excellent performances the boys ran out convincing winners in their first fixture before suffering a narrow defeat in their second. Finally commiserations to our U16 Girls Basketball team who were defeated 33-22 by Heywood Community School in today’s Midlands Semi-Final. Well done to all students who do us proud each and every time they wear the Ardscoil Phádraig jersey and we wish all four teams continued success as their season continues over the coming months.

Ardscoil Phádraig Transition Year students Haidee Temple, Tara Fagan, Adam Kelly and Ben Creegan who have qualified for the Regional Final of the Shaping Your Future Programme with their project entitled Clip it Crutch!

Our Transition Year students enjoyed a second visit from their I-Form mentors Sylvia, Fred and Heather recently. Under the guidance of Mr. Mulvey, our students are working in groups to design a solution to assist someone with a disability or to help with any aspect of a natural disaster. The I-Form mentors were very complimentary of each group’s progress and provided constructive feedback which will greatly benefit our students as they work on the final presentation phase of the process. We wish all students well as they continue to work towards the 3D Printing of their design and we look forward to seeing one of our groups nominated to represent us at the Shaping Your Future final which will take place on December 10th.

Longford GAA Scór Na nÓg Final

Huge well done to our talented students Michaela (Abbeylara GAA Club Set Dancing), Larah & Orla May (Abbeylara GAA Club Novelty Act), Oonagh Cora & Grace (Wolfe Tones Hurling Club Ballad Group) Erin (Ballymore Gaa-Longford Figure Dancing) and Chloe (Clonbroney Minor Club Recitation) who were all crowned County Champions at the Longford GAA Scór na nÓg Final recently. We wish the girls continued success as they progress to the Leinster stage of Scór na nÓg over the coming weeks and we also congratulate all other students who represented their clubs brilliantly last weekend.

Regional Final of the Shaping Your Future Programme

Well done to Transition Year students Haidee Temple, Tara Fagan, Adam Kelly and Ben Creegan who have qualified for the Regional Final of the Shaping Your Future Programme with their project entitled Clip it Crutch! The group have designed a unique clip which can be used to attach a crutch or walking stick to a chair leg, allowing the person ease of access to their crutch when getting up or sitting down from any chair. We wish Haidee, Tara, Adam and Ben continued success as they represent Ardscoil Phádraig in next week’s final.
