School Notes – 6th October, 2017

Ardscoil Phádraig School Notes 6 October 2017

Welcome

We are delighted that our new first years have settled in so well to Ardscoil Phadraig. We would also like to welcome our new teachers, Ms Boudin, French, Mr Mulvey, Metalwork & Engineering, Ms Rushe, Maths and Ms Geraghty, Business. Ten international students have also joined us from Germany, France, Italy and Spain; we hope they will enjoy the experience with us.

LWETB Academic Excellence Awards

The annual Longford Westmeath ETB Academic Achievement awards took place in Mullingar recently. Lochlainn Massey and Katie Comaskey both achieved awards for their excellent results in the Leaving Certificate. Katie has started Home Economics teacher training in St Angela’s College in Sligo. Lochlainn has decided to defer his place in University of Limerick as he was one of a very small number of applicants selected for an apprenticeship with Ryanair. He is currently in Stansted for the first part of his course. Well done to both.

Sacred Heart Primary School

Congrats to our neighbours in the Sacred Heart Primary School on their new extension. We are delighted that some of their past students who are in our school were able to take part in the opening ceremony.

Aisling Festival and Longford Leader Project

We are thrilled to have been selected once again by the Aisling Children’s Arts Festival committee to be involved in a media project with the Longford Leader. This is a great opportunity to see how our local newspaper is put together and to practice our journalistic skills.

Tommie Cunningham Congratulations to 15-year-old Tommie Cunningham who finished third in the The National Junior Baking Competition Final, with his lemon drizzle cake, at the National Ploughing Championships in Screggan, Tullamore last week.

Shoe Box Appeal

This year, we are excited to be contributing to the Team Hope Christmas Shoe Box Appeal again. We are asking our students to donate some simple Christmas gifts to the school and we will fill as many shoe boxes as we can. Students are also welcome to fill a box themselves if they so wish. These gifts will help bring Christmas to less fortunate people in hospitals, schools, shelters, churches, orphanages, community centres and family homes across the world.

Student Enterprise

First Year Business and LCVP students are working to set up a mini enterprise. Last week, Sadie Wheatly, who was employed by the Local Enterprise Office, facilitated a workshop which the students found thought provoking and useful. We look forward to further workshops and a successful business.

European Day of Languages

To celebrate European Day of Languages, our TY students worked very hard with Ms Boudin to plan and deliver some taster language lessons in German and Italian to our first year students. It was a wonderful cultural experience for all involved. The future is bright for our TYs, who excelled in their role as teachers. Bravo à tous les linguists!

Junior Certificate Results

Congratulations to our TY and fifth year students who received their Junior Certificate results recently. These great results are testament to the wonderful students we have here at Ardscoil Phádraig. We are very proud of their achievements and wish them all the best in their studies for Leaving Certificate.

Higher Options

Leaving Certificate students travelled to the Irish Times Higher Options Conference in the RDS on Wednesday of last week. As usual, this was an extremely beneficial day out as speakers at the career talk sessions shared their experience and expertise in various fields of industry, sending our students home with a deeper insight into how qualifications, experience and aptitude can progress into possible employment choices. Students enjoyed the day out and would like to thank Ms Reilly and Mr O Brien for accompanying them.

School Completion

This week, we are delighted to welcome back Helen Maguire from School Completion. Over the past number of years, Helen has carried out huge work for our school in conjunction with Shane Crossan. We look forward to what she has in store for us this year.

School Mass

Our first mass of the academic year took place here at the school on Wednesday of last week. We would like to thank Fr Cadam for his time and Ms Reilly for all her hard work in organising mass. We also must say well done the choir, who were wonderful, led by Mr Byrne.

After School Study

After School study started back again last week and takes place from 4pm to 5.30pm each Monday to Thursday. This is a great opportunity for students to have a quiet time and space to do homework and study.

TY News

TY students are currently taking part in a four-week photography programme with Shelley Corcoran. Over the coming weeks, Shelley will be introducing the students to cameras and equipment, exposure, composition and more. Students are enjoying the programme so far and are looking forward to what’s to come. They are also excited about their ISL (Irish Sign Language) course which will begin soon.
